Shipping Company
When you work with a shipping company you are taking a chance, even though you hope that the company will be professional, safe and prompt in delivery. Here are some important notes to remember when working with a shipping company. First of all, if you are sending a letter or a package, remember to write clearly on the address section. Much of the mail that is returned or lost results from illegible or confusing writing on the address line. Make sure the address is correct and that the person you are writing to is the person listed on the mailing address.
If you are sending something of value then insure it for your own protection. You are usually not required to do this, but insuring a costly item is smart thinking. In the unlikely but still possible event that the item is lost, you can collect the cash value of the item. This feature will depend upon what exactly is being sent. For instance, it's hard to imagine not insuring a car or an expensive jeweled ring during a move. A letter or a relatively inexpensive gift may not merit insurance, especially if the value of the gift is only slightly higher than the cost of insurance.
If you are shipping a package internationally, then you should be sure that the shipping company is trustworthy and has experience in shipping your type of package. You will be subject to international law and regulation and the shipping company helping you should take care of all these matters beforehand. If you are sending an item of high monetary value, then you may want to inspect the item carefully and review it with the shipping company representative, noting any flaws or preexisting damage. This is an important step, as any claim of damage you file will have to be based on new evidence compared to the established condition of the item before shipping took place.
If you are afraid of your letter or package being lost in the mail then ask for certification or a return receipt. The shipping company can either have the recipient sign for the package or can simply return a receipt stating that the item was delivered to the stated address. This is the next best thing to insurance, since at least you will know that the item wasn't lost.
